If you have a silk scarf or any other scarf made from a delicate material, I am sure you have asked yourself how to keep it looking like the day you bought it, or how best to wash it to get those difficult stains out.
Below we provide you with a few simple steps on how to properly care for your most delicate silk scarves.
Apart from silk, scarves can be made from a variety of different materials and fabrics, just like cotton, wool, cashmere...yet they all have one thing in common: they are very delicate and need a minimum amount of care to maintain them looking as good as new for as long as possible.
Cleaning localised stains, for example, a lipstick stain, you can apply a little diluted pH neutral soap on your finger tips. Apply it in a circular motion to avoid breaking any of the silk fibres.
To clean the whole scarf, you can dip it in a bowl of warm water and clean it with a pH neutral soap, like most body soaps are. You should never, however, soak the scarf for an extensive amount of time.
When it comes round to drying your scarf you must be very careful. You should hang it from the shower rail, allowing the scarf to drip dry of all the water. After five minutes take it down before laying it flat on an open towel on a flat surface. With another towel, cover the scarf, so that the scarf is lying flat between two towels and leave it for at least an hour.
After that, hang it again over the shower rail just like in the beginning.
What you should never do is use pegs to hang the scarf. The dents left by the pegs will damage the silk fibre in a way that is unfixable. Same goes for drying the scarf in sunlight, the ultraviolet rays could cause irreversible harm to the fabric. And lastly never, ever, put it in the dryer.
To iron your scarf in the right way, and without any risk, we recommend you use two pieces of white cotton sheet. One of them should be placed over the ironing board, before laying the scarf flat (always the opposite way to avoid damaging any of the colour), place the second sheet on top. You should then dampen the upper layer slightly and choosing
the most delicate setting, “silk”, on the iron. You should always be careful when choosing the correct temperature, as high temperatures can damage a scarf very easily.
